Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell is the first woman Vice Chancellor of the University of Manchester – the UK’s biggest University. She is Professor of Physiology and her current research is focused on strokes. In addition to her academic career she has been involved in running and advising various research and funding bodies including the Medical Research Council, Cancer Research UK and the Biotechnology, Biological Sciences Research Council.

She is a Fellow of the Royal Society and a non-executive director of pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca. And in 2012 she was appointed by the Prime Minister to co-chair the Council for Science and Technology.
