At Lilian's urging, Matt traced his mother, who had put Matt up for adoption, but it was not a happy encounter.

When their mother was close to death, Paul got in touch. Matt was in prison at the time and wasn't interested. But Lilian attended the funeral and became close to sympathetic Paul - so much so that he eventually declared his love for her.

Conflicted Lilian initially chose to commit to Matt. But she eventually succumbed and they started a passionate affair.

For a while they were blissfully happy. But Paul's nice-guy image started to crack when he learned of his ex-wife Celia's plans to marry again.
