The Eaters of Light

For generations, a small community of Picts in Scotland defended Earth against invasion by the ‘Eater of Light’. The Picts developed weapons that would poison the light on which the beast fed (refracting light through Rose Quartz geodes), and stop it from breaching the gateway into our world.

Every generation a brave warrior would enter the portal to defend the gate. Time travelled more slowly through the portal, so although each warrior survived only a few hours against the beast, their efforts protected Earth for decades. Little did they know that the creature they fought was only the first, the leader of a deadly swarm…

The Doctor could only speculate as to the origin of the creatures, suggesting they were light eating locusts breaking through cracks between worlds and coming into the light to feed. There are endless stretches of space with no living stars… maybe the Eaters of Light were responsible? Wherever the creatures came from, the symbol of the Pictish Beast, carved into the rocks over the centuries, now serves as a warning to future generations…
