With his rural verse and words of wisdom for every occasion Bert both entertained and infuriated the assembled company in equal measure. Easily bored, Bert struggled to settle into retirement. Living at the Brookfield Bungalow, he never failed to lend a helping hand, whether it was creating the Fairbrothers' vision of an egg-mobile or entertaining baby Rosie with "Wind the Bobbin Up".
Bert was tirelessly supported and provided for by faithful wife Freda until her death in March 2015. He then shared his home with newcomers Rex and Toby Fairbrother. Boisterous Toby moved out but his calmer brother Rex remained and developed a close and comfortable relationship with Bert.
