Lady Justice Arden was awarded a Kennedy Scholarship to study at Harvard Law School in 1970. She practiced in company law at the beginning of her career, before being made a QC in 1986. She was appointed a Justice of the High Court in 1993, being the first woman judge to be assigned the Chancery Division, and in 2000 she was appointed to the Court of Appeal, the third female judge to do so.

She is Head of International Judicial Relations for England and Wales and a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague.
