Ann Dowling became the first female Professor in the Engineering Department of the University of Cambridge in 1998. She is currently the Department’s Head and is an authority on aircraft noise. She has worked at Cambridge since 1977, but also held posts at the MIT (1999-2000) and Caltech (2001).
She is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and was made a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2003. She holds an honorary ScD degree from Trinity College Dublin. She was appointed CBE in 2002 and a DBE for services to Science in 2007.
