Profile: Boo Prabhaker
Boo describes what led her to make her BBC Fresh documentary.
Why did you pick this subject for Fresh?
I wanted to make a film that showed the BBC Three Fresh audience something they hadn’t seen before. Dogs can be wonderful companions and dear friends but even I was surprised to know that some are able support young people in education in such a vitally important and unique way.
I love stories that involve people overcoming a challenge or difficulty in their life.
What motivated you to make this film?
I love stories that involve people overcoming a challenge or difficulty in their life. For me, this story was both compelling and powerful. I also knew that the people watching the film would instantly fall in love with Jack. Carolyn is such a special person and her relationship with Jack is amazing to watch.
What equipment did you use to shoot the film?
We shot with a Panasonic AF101 and a Go-Pro.
Tell us about post-production.
Alice White, edited the film beautifully using Avid. Clemens Majunke, who also shot the film, colour graded it on DaVinci. Asher Abraham did the sound design on Avid Pro Tools 11.
Who/what inspires you?
I love the documentary filmmakers Clio Barnard, Werner Herzog and Nick Broomfield. In terms of fiction, I am inspired by so many different directors, it’d be difficult to list them all here!
What are your plans for the future?
I’m hoping to get my film company, Ceremony in the Sky Pictures, off the ground in the next year or so. I am currently working on a short spy-thriller called Mission X, which I hope to take to festivals later on this year.
What is the most important thing you have learned so far?
Be true to yourself and make the films that you want to make.
