She started her career training in Savile Row, and was appointed Creative Director of the fashion house Chloé in March 1997. She launched her own fashion house in 2001 in a joint venture with Gucci Group, and presented her first line at Paris Fashion Week in October 2001. She currently operates 23 freestanding stores across Europe and America.

An outspoken animal rights activist, she does not use leather or fur in her designs. She received the British fashion Council’s Red Carpet Award in 2011. Stella McCartney was responsible for creating the kit worn by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic teams.
