Where did street food come from?

Twenty or thirty years ago many street markets were on their last legs. Most people found a trip by car to a comfortable supermarket or a chain store more appetising than a check round market stalls – particularly if it was cold, or wet. Today though, markets are increasingly where many more affluent people choose to shop. And it’s food and drink that has helped to revitalise them. First, there were farmers' markets. Now, the craze is for street food. Pop-up stalls serving dishes from around the world to be eaten on the move, or at a bar. It feels new – hipster-tastic. But in reality street food has been a part of life in British towns and cities for centuries. Tom Holland finds out more.
