Inala

Edinburgh International Festival's flagship dance event Inala transferred to Sadler's Wells in September 2014.

A fusion of South African dance and classical ballet, it combines the musical talents of four-time Grammy Award-winning choir Ladysmith Black Mambazo with stunning performances from the dancers of the Royal Ballet and Rambert.

About Inala

Inala – meaning abundance of goodwill – is a muscular and beautiful blend of South African and Western cultures in an exhilarating celebration of the rainbow nation.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo

Embracing South Africa’s past, its present and new hopes for the future, Inala delivers a spiritually uplifting and beautiful live story-telling experience, powered by a cultural explosion of music, song and dance.

Performed live by the choir and an instrumental ensemble, Inala's brand new score is a collaboration between classical composer Ella Spira and Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

Inala's costumes were designed by acclaimed designer and former taxidermist Georg Meyer-Wiel, who was recently awarded the British Museum’s honorary Trailblazer Award by the Campaign for Drawing.

Inala is part of the Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme. It was funded by the City of Edinburgh Council, and Creative Scotland through National Lottery funding. It was also supported by the Department of Arts and Culture in South Africa.
