The Wisdom of 6 Music’s Wise Women

Three Wise Women will be visiting the 6 Music manger bearing some very special gifts this festive season.

Across Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day, Jodie Whittaker, Beth Ditto and Sharon Horgan will bestow us with mountains of wit, oodles of wisdom and stacks of the finest tunes. They'll each present two hours of their favourite music, as well as selecting an evening's worth of programmes from the 6 Music archives. Here are some of the sagest words you'll be able to hear in their upcoming shows...

Jodie Whittaker

Even if you're not a sci-fi fan, you must have been living in another dimension if you missed the news earlier this year that Jodie was confirmed to play the first ever female Doctor Who. She's set to make her debut when Peter Capaldi's Doctor regenerates in this year's Christmas special. Jodie's other acting credits include the recent BBC drama Trust Me, ITV's hugely popular Broadchurch and the critically-acclaimed Black Mirror. Listeners to Shaun Keaveny will recognise Jodie as a regular guest on 6 Music Breakfast, a show of which she is also a big fan. Jodie's takeover begins at 6pm on Christmas Eve and her archive picks include The First Time with Arcade Fire and Jarvis Cocker's Musical Map of Sheffield.

Here's Jodie's advice on what to avoid if you want Christmas dinner to be a success...

Beth Ditto

Beth is the former frontwoman of American rockers Gossip. She made her name as a bold and outspoken musician with the band's 2006 disco-punk anthem, Standing in The Way of Control, which challenged the Bush-era policy on civil rights and Gay Marriage in the US. She is an advocate of women being body-positive and has appeared nude on the front covers of NME and Love magazines. Beth is still rocking the music world and released her debut solo album, Fake Sugar, earlier this year. Beth is in control of the 6 Music levers from 6pm on Christmas Day, and as well as spinning some awesome tunes, she introduces The First Time with Tori Amos and The Smiths at The Beeb.

Perhaps wisely, Beth looks to fellow musicians Debbie Harry and Sleater-Kinney for her first wise words...

Sharon Horgan

The wonderfully talented Sharon Horgan is an actor, writer and director. Among the many credits already under her belt, she starred in and co-wrote the much-loved sitcoms Pulling and Catastrophe. She won a British Comedy Award for her performance in the former and a BAFTA for her writing on the latter, and also co-wrote the recent BBC hit Motherland. If that doesn't provide enough evidence of her wisdom, we're not sure what would. Sharon is taking over the 6 Music airwaves from 6pm on Boxing Day. Among her picks from the archive are The First Time with Loudon Wainwright III and David Bowie Star Special.
