Face the changes: Photographs of 1970s Liverpool
27 March 2015
In the early 1970s, as close-knit communities were being fractured by inner city development, young photographer Tricia Porter set out to document the changing face of Liverpool.
She was advised not to embark on the project in the area, in the decade before tensions between police and the black community erupted in the Toxteth Riots. But Porter gained the trust of the residents, who welcomed her into their lives, businesses and homes.
Along with future husband David, a student at Liverpool University who interviewed the locals, they capture a personal picture of eveyday life in 1970s Toxteth. Unseen for 40 years, Tricia Porter's photographs are at The Bluecoat, Liverpool from Saturday 4 April until 5 July 2015.
