Every Woman Dazzles in Leith for Edinburgh Art Festival
19 August 2016
Ciara Phillips’ Dazzle Ship Every Woman, co-commissioned by Edinburgh Art Festival and 14-18 NOW, is the fourth in a series of ‘Dazzle’ ship designs developed by contemporary artists to commemorate the First World War. This art of confusion transformed ships into an array of multi-directional shapes that made it difficult for German U-Boats to gauge a ship’s direction or speed. The Turner Prize-nominated artist's conversion of former lighthouse ship MV Fingal honours the war contribution by women, and marks the centenary of the Battle of the Somme and the Battle of Jutland. Watch Every Woman come to life at Leith Docks in this timelapse video and, below, BBC Two's Edinburgh Nights looks at the history of Dazzle and Philipps' design. It has been announced that The Dazzle Ship's stay at Prince of Wales Dock, Leith has been extended into 2017.
