* This isn't a fully exhaustive list - there are some instances where some kind of contraception method is inferred but not detailed e.g. Ruth was shocked when she discovered she was pregnant with Ben after a moment of abandon on a haystack with David - but doesn't explain what their "being careful" means in terms of specific contraception methods. Likewise, when Kate discovers that she's pregnant with Phoebe, she too refers to having been 'careful' without further detail. Be relieved also that we're not revisiting awkward conversations about "taking precautions" between Alistair and Dan (2011), Kate and Phoebe (2015) and a matter-of-fact discussion about safe sex between Brian and Debbie in 1992.
