Putting you in the picture with a restaged masterpiece

VanGoYourself

A short film showing how artworks have been recreated by members of the public.

It could be considered a 'cultural selfie'. A new way to approach and appreciate famous artworks is being launched as part of this year's after-hours Museums at Night festival run by Culture24.

VanGoYourself encourages people to take a photograph of themselves as they restage well-known paintings from Masters such as Van Gogh and Rembrandt and share the results on a dedicated website.

Jane Finnis, Culture24's CEO, said: "There are some brilliant pictures to recreate from a selection of serious selfies you can do on your own or some more flamboyant historical scenes where you will need to rope in your friends to help and lay your hands on a few props. Everyone can find a painting that they see themselves in!”

The three-day Museums at Night festival started on 15 May with events at hundreds of venues across the UK, including a performance of Russell Maliphant's Second Breath by English National Ballet in the main exhibition space at Imperial War Museum, North, which was streamed live on BBC Arts on Saturday 17 May.

VanGoYourself was developed in partnership with Europeana, a Europe wide project which aims to promote greater access and use of cultural heritage resources.
