33 albums to look forward to during the rest of 2017

It might not be long until attentions turn to albums of the year lists, but there's still a host of great records on the way in the final months of 2017.

Here's our selection of albums to look forward to before the year is out… and a few to expect in 2018.

| AUGUST |

Title: Villains

It’s been nearly four years since Josh Homme gathered together Queens of the Stone Age for a record – although as Iggy Pop will tell you, Homme has been busy creating the album Post Pop Depression and the film American Valhalla. Informed by his young son’s love of Uptown Funk, Mark Ronson has produced, adding disco beats to the Queens' crunching guitars. Title: Holiday Destination

Fresh from scoring a theatre production, the Tyneside singer-songwriter returns with a bold, rhythmic and engaging getaway in the form of her third album. Though listen below to find out why you might not learn any of that from her Wikipedia entry…

Title: A Deeper Understanding

A follow-up to BBC Radio 6 Music's album of 2014, Lost in the Dream, had been expected much sooner, so delays stoked fears that Adam Granduciel and co had disappeared down a studio-shaped rabbit hole. However, after creating hours and hours of recording in New York and LA, they’ve brilliantly sculpted an epic record out of those epic sessions.

Out: 25 August

Title: Painted Ruins

Though seemingly a little more robust and digital than some of their previous swoons, there are plenty of clever twists on the group's fifth album to ensure they remain smarter than the average bear (or band).

Out: 18 August

Title: TFCF

Short for "Themes From Crying Fountain", the Australian/ American art rock berserkers return after three years with more personal songs, yet remain brilliantly out there.

Out: 25 August

Title: A Fever Dream

Having put pretty much everything else into their songs – changing time signatures… eternity spanning ideas… – the Manchester pop experimentalists have chucked big choruses into the mix for their fourth album. A dream ticket.

Out: 18 August

Title: 24-7 Rock Star S**t

It's been a busy year for the Jarman brothers already. They celebrated the 10-year anniversary of their third album Men's Needs, Women's Needs, Whatever with a tour, and were the subject of an exhibition in their home town of Wakefield. They also spent five days with Nirvana and Pixies engineer Steve Albini. It might not sound like much – and originally they were just aiming for an EP – but by recording everything live to tape they found they had enough time and ideas to make an album, which they recently described to 6 Music as raw and stripped back, and having lots in common with their self-titled 2004 debut.

Title: Live For The Moment

Steve Lamacq’s Yorkshire favourites will release their debut this summer and they’ve given us plenty of clues that it will be a case of fast-paced, tune-drenched indie. Elementary!

Out: 18 August

Title: Dark Days + Canapés

Having admitted to preferring to write more ambiguously in the past, Ghostpoet – AKA Obaro Ejimiwe – has explained that "this time around I felt there were specific stories that needed telling" ensuring his fourth album will be more direct than ever. Lead single Immigrant Boogie set the tone, and expect more uncompromising yet engaging tales when the album drops.

Title: The Road, Pt. 1

James Lavelle and co. announced details of an upcoming new album earlier in the year, revealing it was inspired by their experience of curating Meltdown Festival in 2014. Mark Lanegan, Primal Scream’s Andrew Innes and Elliott Power are among the contributors. Expect a taster of what's to come when UNKLE join Lauren Laverne for a live session on Monday 7 August.

| SEPTEMBER |

Title: American Dream

During his ‘retirement’ James Murphy told Q the only times he ever considered reforming LCD Soundsystem was when he saw “a band that’s doing well who I don’t think are very good”. Well we owe someone for their artistic failure because LCD’s fourth studio LP will soon be with us.

Out: 1 September

Title: Hippopotamus

For their 25th album, Ron and Russell Mael are having a whale of a time riffing on everything from Shakespeare to wild animals via Edith Piaf and camper vans. Always more art than pop, these gentlemen have always written songs that sound like smart-bombs, and these new songs sound like they'll break all the high score records on Angry Birds.

To get us in the mood, they recently sat in for Jarvis on 6 Music, rifling through their expansive record collection. And earlier in the year they performed at the 6 Music Festival, where they shared some of the wonderfully playful tunes from Hippopotamus, alongside some classic tracks.

Title: V

Produced by Paul Epworth, The Horrors’ fifth album continues their stunning evolution, with the dystopian V is expected to be their most progressive and expansive work yet, as demonstrated by lead single Machine.

Out: 22 September

Title: Sleep Well Beast

The band promised an end to all “self editing” while assembling the songs for their seventh studio album. They have since declared themselves happy with the “wild results”, and having previously set a love song in the middle of a zombie apocalypse, that’s some statement of intent!

Out: 8 September

Title: Savage (Songs From A Broken World)

Pioneer! Outcast! Visionary! Gary Numan has been called them all as he's divided opinion throughout a 40 year career. However, with the likes of Nine Inch Nails citing him as an influence, he is now enjoying a well-earned renaissance. His new album is a concept record describing the world after a global warming-like disaster. However, it's an apocalyptic sound you can dance to as new single My Name is Ruin demonstrates – it even features a cameo from his daughter Persia.

Out: 15 September

Title: Elytral

Championed by Lauren Laverne, Marc Riley and Cerys Matthews, there’s been much anticipation for the singer-songwriter’s second record to her 2012 debut, which promises to be an even darker mix of her jazz and prog leanings.

Out: 1 September

Title: Every Country’s Son

Made in America at the turn of the year, the band say the country’s politics inspired them to make more escapist music than normal. The result? They say it’s “maximalist” Mogwai. Every Country's Sun is 56 concise minutes of gracious elegance, hymnal trance-rock and transcendental euphoria.

Out: 1 September

Title: Uniform

The Bristolian trip hop don pushes at extremes in terms of collaborators for his 13th release. Not only has he recruited a host of up-and-coming singers for this “intricate” album, but Martina Topley-Bird, vocalist on his acclaimed debut Maxinquaye, returns for the pair’s first work together in 15 years.

Out: 22 September

Title: Concrete & Gold

Having worked in a studio for the first time in ages – rather than their own super-sized garage, or made a documentary and an album simultaneously – Dave Grohl has been hinting that a lot of artists who were around the place, the likes of Lady Gaga and Adele might have made secret guest appearances on their Beatles-infused, new album. See if you can hear them when the record finally comes outs.

Title: Stranger In The Alps

The Lammo Recommended, Los Angeles singer-songwriter’s first releases were produced by Ryan Adams, and issued by his Pax-Am label, while her debut album boasts a guest spot from Conor Oberst. Not bad guides for scaling musical mountains.

Title: Music For People In Trouble

Having joined Jarvis and Richard Hawley for the Songs Of Scott Walker: Late Night BBC Prom (below), plus also collaborated with M83, Sundfør is ready to remind the world what she does in her own right. Her new album is directly inspired by a series of travels she made around the globe, which took her to far flung and dangerous climes including North Korean and the Amazon jungle.

Out: 1 September

Title: Prophets of Rage

Rage Against The Machine’s Tom Morello plus Public Enemy’s Chuck D (and friends); multiplied by the fact they’re not fans of the current American president; equals a highly-charged, angry record.

Out: 15 September

| LATER IN THE AUTUMN |

Title: As You Were

It's a first solo album from the former Oasis frontman, which Greg Kurstin (Foo Fighters/ Adele Beck) and Dan Grech-Marguerat (Mumford & Sons/ Circa Waves) have produced. He previewed a host of new material, including single Wall Of Glass, with a series of showcase gigs including a return to the Glastonbury Festival in June.

Title: Fatherland

Inspired by a host of intimate singer-songwriters, including Elliott Smith, and by becoming a father. The Bloc Party frontman says his latest solo effort boasts a new sonic palette and a more organic approach than his previous work.

Out: 6 October

Title: Colors

We've been expecting a "funk party album" from Beck since 2014. However, despite the odd track dropping online the release date for a full record has never quite materialised, until now. Called Colors (English purists this side of the Atlantic are no doubt fuming), Beck says he’s concentrated on writing “classic songs”, and the results so far – singles Up All Night and Dear Life – have been irresistibly poppy.

Out: 13 October

Title: Who Built The Moon?

The long-promised dance-leaning High Flying Birds album? DJ, producer and soundtrack supremo David Holmes has collaborated on the record that the former Oasis guitarist says comes from a series of loop-based experiments. His old band this ain't. "We couldn't have made this record in Oasis - there would have been Bedlam," Noel tells 6 Music's Matt Everitt in the interview you can hear below.

Out: 24 November

Title: Lotta Sea Lice

After gigging together the songwriters recorded a joint album in eight days… spread over 15 months! Tracks for the album include recent single Over Everything, Fear Is Like A Forrest and Continental Breakfast. Tuck in.

Out: 13 October

| MAYBE BEFORE THE END OF THE YEAR... |

Title: TBC

Two for the price of one, perhaps! Although Rostam Batmanglij has stood down from the band and is releasing a solo album called Half Light on 8 September, as Consequence Of Sound report, the multi-instrumentalist and producer is believed to be collaborating in the studio with his former bandmates. Frontman Ezra Koenig has confirmed sessions are progressing with Conversation and Flower Moon among the songs they’re working on, while the working title is currently Mitsubishi Macchiato. No word on when we'll get to hear it, but something before the end of 2017 has been rumoured.

"Did I mention I have a TENTH ALBUM READY TO GO?" Cat Power calmly asked her Instagram followers recently, confirming that a follow-up to 2012's Sun should be with us soon. Confirming that she is "back in the game", Power – real name Chan Marshall – has been pretty busy between releases, touring with Nick Cave and narrating Janis Joplin documentary, Janis: Little Girl Blue, this year.

Title: TBC

Not much to go on from the band themselves, but Albert Hammond Jr's dad, Albert Hammond Sr (well, of course!), has dropped a few hints. According to the veteran singer-songwriter told the Western Australian that the band are recorded in Rick Rubin... and he's very proud.

Title: MASSEDUCTION

Expect a unique blend of 1980s pop hooks and the catholic church’s more extravagant aesthetics, as Annie Clark merges a selection of Robert Fripp-inspired guitar riffs and emotionally saturated vocals. She promises to “pull no punches” on what looks set to be a daring yet intimately accessible album.

| (PROBABLY) NOT BEFORE THE END OF THE YEAR... |

Title: 4.14 Scream / TBC

Once one of the most prolific and regular releasers of albums there was, while Robert Smith and co have consistently toured, they have not put out a record since 2008’s 4:13 Dream. 4.14 Scream was once rumoured to be its follow-up, however following line-up changes The Cure went back into the studio and... well... nothing yet. In the meantime we'll have to make do with highlights from The Cure's 2012 Reading Festival set.
