Eddie Redmayne: I want to play Doctor Who

Eddie Redmayne, who is currently starring in Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, has revealed he would like to step into the role of Doctor Who.

During a visit to Radio 1 Breakfast, he told Nick Grimshaw the appearance of his character Newt Scamander had drawn comparisons to the Doctor and that he would love to take his turn in the Tardis.

"Would I do it? Yeah! It's a great show," said Eddie today.

"I do see the resemblance. I see the scarf, I see the coat, I see the bow tie.

"I'm also a huge fan of those actors, love Matt Smith. I suppose the briefcase has a Tardis vibe to it - so yeah!"

He may be tied to the Fantastic Beasts franchise for several years, with reports suggesting there will be a total of five films in the series. He adds that fans may have to wait a while to see him step into the role of the beloved Time Lord.

"It looks like a lot of work. I've spoken to Matt and those schedules are pretty rigorous. Maybe when I'm 73."

Why is Eddie Redmayne soooooooooooo handsome?

Eddie responds to the YouTube comments left beneath the trailer of his latest film.

Fantastic Beasts is written by Harry Potter author JK Rowling and set in the same universe as Harry and Hogwarts.

Eddie says his film also shares the same magic as the movies about the young wizard.

"It has the heart and the wonder of the Potter films," he says.

"I always find the Potter films are a great place to go back to every year for a hug, a warm wizardy hug."

"When I read the script the amazing thing about Fantastic Beasts, the first film is just its own 'thing'.

"Sometimes I feel with franchise films, the first film is pilot for the future. What I loved about this is that it felt like its own entity."

Eddie also revealed that JK Rowling had shared secrets of the next Fantastic Beasts story with him when she visited the set of the movie, which is set in New York but was filmed in Watford.

"She has this infectious love of her characters," he says.

"She was writing the second film while we were making the first and she'd say "I can't really tell you anything" but then she'd start whispering quite exciting prospects."

Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them is released on 18 November 2016
