Jack's back: The Shining returns to terrify again
31 October 2016
Check in to the Overlook hotel for rare behind-the-scenes footage from Stanley Kubrick’s chilly horror classic, The Shining. See Kubrick driving Shelley Duvall to the brink and the devastating on-set fire which almost ended the film. The remastered movie is back in cinemas for Halloween.

Stanley Kubrick's 1980 adaptation of Stephen King's horror classic, The Shining, has been hailed as one of the filmmaker's masterpieces - even if the author himself famously hated it.
Featuring a disturbingly over-the-top performance by Jack Nicholson, the film charts the descent into madness of writer and family man Jack Torrance in the oppressive-looking Overlook Hotel. Throw into the mix a child with psychic abilities, a pair of creepy twins, a lift shaft spewing tidal waves of blood and you end up with moments of pure cinema magic.
A notoriously difficult director to work with, Kubrick's row with lead actress Shelley Duvall was captured on camera in a behind-the-scenes documentary. As the extract below ably shows, Kubrick venting his fury was almost as scary as the film itself.
Now, to coincide with Halloween, the BFI have released a new, cleaned up digital version of the film. Taken from the US theatrical release, the film even includes an extra 24 minutes of dread that European audiences never got to cower through.
So, if it's been a hard week, why not take a trip to the cinema because, as the film reminds us, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. And if you've seen the film before you'll know where that leads...
