Ali Plumb previews the biggest new movies from Comic-Con!

Ali Plumb rounds up some of the hottest new films from San Diego Comic-Con!

Unless you've been hibernating this past weekend you'll be aware of a little thing called San Diego Comic-Con. Here, crowds of excitable comicbook fans gathered to see all-new footage of what feels like an endless list of superhero films on their way out, courtesy of Marvel and DC. Amidst the sea of news, appearances, and frequent opportunities to geek-out, highlights included Oscar-winner Brie Larson officially unveiled as Captain Marvel and Man of Steel Henry Cavill sneaking around the show floor disguised in a V for Vendetta mask.

So it only feels right that resident film critic Ali Plumb gives us his expert take on the trailers that debuted...

Ali says...

She was the best thing in Batman V Superman and there’s no doubt she’s the best thing in her own movie. In this light-on-plot, heavy-on-action teaser trailer, there are so many cool action beats we suspect sails of magical lassoos with skyrocket shortly.

Wonder Woman is in UK cinemas from 2 June, 2017.

Batman V Superman director Zack Snyder seems to have taken note of fans’ criticism and included, you know, a sense of humour in the sequel. I counted over five jokes in just this trailer, which is approximately five more than we saw in BvS.

Justice League is in UK cinemas from 17 November, 2017.

Ali says...

So many amazing actors, one GIANT ape. Samuel L Jackson, Brie Larson, John Goodman and Loki / The Night Manager himself (delete as appropriate), Tom Hiddleston, square off against cinema’s foremost Donkey Kong enthusiast. Wait, King Kong, Donkey Kong? OH MY GOD.

Kong: Skull Island is in UK cinemas from 10 March, 2017.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Ali says...

This Harry Potter spin-off from is different from its original HP source in one key way: it doesn’t feature The Boy Who Lived at all. Instead, it’s Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, a magizoologist in 1920s New York who loses the very dangerous creatures he brings with him in a magical suitcase, and has to then catch ‘em all. Wait – this is the Pokemon Go movie in disguise, isn’t it? Very sneaky, JK, very sneaky indeed…

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is in UK cinemas from 18 November, 2016.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword

Ali says...

Game of Thrones meets Lock, Stock in this – let’s be honest – utterly confusing revisit to Ye Olde Englande Times. Charlie Hunnam butts heads with Jude Law, and there’s magic, and fighting, and a castle, and an elephant, and WHAT IS GOING ON?

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword is in UK cinemas from 24 March, 2017.

The LEGO Batman Movie

Ali says...

Now this is funny. SO funny, in fact, it’s difficult to work out whether it’s aimed at kids who like Lego or pop culture-loving adults who love gags about the inherent ridiculousness of Bruce Wayne and his thumpy, grumpy ways. Michael Cera steals the show as Robin, though Ralph Fiennes’ Alfred comes close to nicking it back. Worth watching if only for the best piano-based takedown you’ll see this year.

The LEGO Batman Movie is in UK cinemas from 10 February, 2017.

Ali says...

Yes, it does remind you of Inception. And yes, it does remind you of every other Marvel movie: difficult lead character learns to be a superhero, bad guy threatens to destroy the world, difficult lead character defeats bad guy despite only just having learnt to be a superhero, massive special effects-filled finale, the end. BUT! This is Benedict Cumberbatch we’re talking about, and Mads Mikkelsen as the bad guy, so let’s be honest, you’re going to watch this movie. Seriously, you might as well face it.

Doctor Strange is in UK cinemas from 2 October, 2016.

Sherlock

First look at series 4 - BBC One

It’s not a game anymore. Sherlock series 4. Coming to BBC One in 2017.

In a word: ‘SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!’ That’s pretty much all we know about series four of Sherlock right now, and maybe it’s best we keep it that way.

And yes, this is a TV show, but it’s also Sherlock. So, you know. Sherlock. It’s like a movie.

Series 4 of Sherlock airs on BBC One in 2017.

And a couple more movies to look forward to...

Suicide Squad

Ali says...

If you were looking to avoid spoilers for DC’s bad guys bonanza, maybe dodge this trailer, which shows yet more of what to expect from Jared Leto’s Joker, Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn and Will Smith’s Deadshot. If you are brave enough to watch it, well… good luck getting that song out of your head.

Suicide Squad is in UK cinemas from 5 August, 2016.

Blair Witch

Ali says...

Originally called ‘The Woods’ the producers behind this surprise sequel performed the perfect marketing switcheroo when they announced – BOO! – Blair Witch was back* and the original found footage horror was getting another follow-up.

*Note: Blair Witch is not a person. This is a joke.

Blair Witch is in UK cinemas from 16 September, 2016.
