Nick Grimshaw: I got a rash interviewing Jake Gyllenhaal because I fancy him so much

If you thought the life of a Radio 1 DJ was glamorous, you might want to think again. When we spoke to Nick Grimshaw (the man millions of people wake up with every morning on The Radio 1 Breakfast Show), it was all about rashes and cleaning up dog sick at 1am.

We chatted to Nick for our weekly New Music Frid-Eh? interview, where every question is loosely (and we mean loosely) related to the names of the new songs we're playing on air. Here's what he had to say.

Alessia Cara - Scars To Your Beautiful

What happens when someone properly beautiful comes in to the studio that you actually fancy?

I get a rash. It happened with Jake Gyllenhaal. He was in on Monday and he is really attractive and really lovely and really funny. He's absolutely ideal and I get this weird rash, which isn't very cool, around my neck. It's really obvious. I just did my podcast with Caroline Flack and she said I talked to Jake Gyllenhaal really differently than every other guest, just because I fancy him.

Laura Mvula - Ready Or Not

Have you ever felt totally not ready for a guest you're interviewing?

Yes. Fi-Fi and Matt once booked a guest for me as a surprise. I loved this DJ Snake song. It was a massive song, I was obsessed with it and I played it every day and as a surprise they had booked DJ Snake but I didn't know what DJ Snake looked like, so they were like "Surprise!" and it was just a bald man.

I was like, "who's that?" but it was on air so I didn't know who it was and I didn't know what to ask him because I just liked one of his songs a bit.

Adele - Water Under The Bridge

What celebrity story are you sick of and needs to be water under the bridge?

The Taylor Swift and Kanye West beef. I feel like people really need to get over it and I feel like we talk about it constantly. I'm pretty sure it was six or seven years ago and people always explain it as well. Yeah, we know.

"Do you remember when he went on stage?" Yeah. We know. We need to stop talking about it.

Sigma feat. Birdy - Find Me

What do you do when you've got a guest in the studio and you find they're not very nice or not very interesting?

Play a song. Get rid of them. It's always quite good because you can always put a song on and then in the song you can decide what to do. It's rare that people are difficult, but when they are you owe it to everyone listening to get rid of them. If they've come in and don't want to answer or are being difficult, it's not fun to listen to.

Sometimes you have to try really hard and you find some people have never been awake so early in the morning, because they're in a band or something. So when they come in and think they're being difficult, they're not they're just really tired because they've never been awake at 8am.

Stevie Wonder feat. Ariana Grande - Faith

What moments on air shake your faith in yourself the most?

When Tina Daheley comes in and she's wearing Crocs. She wears these green Crocs and they're really distracting and she puts her feet up on the desk. When I see the Crocs it really throws me.

She doesn't really, but please put it in.

Catfish & The Bottlemen - Outside

How does getting up at ridiculous AM affect your life outside of Radio 1?

It's only bad when the alarm first goes off. So for the first 15 minutes of your day, it's the only time you hate it. I really like being in a car early in the morning and I like it, obviously, when I get to work - I love it. It's like having jet-lag, constantly. You yawn in people's faces a lot and people get offended.

MK - My Love 4 U

How does being a loving dog owner change your life?

I hate sounding like a nag or a grouch. I hate sounding boring or telling people what to do but that's what you have to do. You have to be naggy, grouchy and tell them what to do all the time. You don't want to be uptight, but you have to have rules that make you re-evaluate being an adult and how you live your life because you want to be fun and let them on the couch but it's not their house.

Last night I had to get up at 5 so I got into bed and when I come in they always get really excited and run around barking so the only way you can calm them down really quick is to let them into bed with you. So I let them into bed and my new one, who's four months old, he threw up in the bed the second I put him in the bed.

How had he not thrown up all night? I left him at 8pm it was 1am, I could hear him wretching and as I picked him he puked everywhere. They're very adorable but very annoying.

Deorro - Bailar

There are some important people on the new Deorro single. How important is the team you have around you on the breakfast show?

It's really important. I really like it when it's really fun in there. If it's fun in the room and it's people having fun, then it transcends through the radio and I think you can hear that. I think radio shows I like listening to, like when Sara Cox did breakfast or Scott and Chris in the afternoon. I always want to text Scott and Chris and be in the room. It's really important to have fun in the room because it makes you want to listen and be part of it.
