The family reunion
Please leave a message
Have you ever invited a lot of people to a party - and then got worried that they might not come? Did they send you messages to say they couldn’t make it? That’s what happened to Jude.
Today's a very special day: it's the annual family reunion. Her children, grandchildren and other relatives are coming from many parts of the country. But… unfortunately some of the guests are going to be late, and some can't make it at all.
Sarah, Dan and Brian have left messages for her on the phone.

Message 1
Hi Aunt Jude, it’s Sarah.
John had a car crash yesterday. He’s alright. He wasn’t badly hurt, but he had to go to A&E because he banged his head and he was feeling kind of dizzy.
Nothing to worry about. He’s okay. But, unfortunately that means that we’ve got to stay home this weekend ...
Auntie, I’m really sorry, but we’ll have to miss the family reunion this time. Give me a call when you can. Bye!
Message 2
Hi Mum, it’s Dan. We’re going to be late, I'm afraid. First we had to stop at the petrol station… And the little oil light came on, so we’ve got to change the engine oil too. Anyway… it's annoying… but we should be there by 3. See you then!
Message 3
Hi, it's Brian. I'm almost with you. I didn't have to go to the meeting today, so I won't be late. See you soon!
If you need to, you can download the audio.

Poor Aunt Jude. Only one person is coming on time. On the next two pages we’ll look more closely at the language in these messages.
