Session 1
Sometimes short is best, and in this session we look at spoken short forms. Why say give me when you can say gimme? Learn more, improve your pronunciation and test your knowledge.
Activity 3
Pronunciation practice
Repeat after me...
This session is all about spoken English, so in this activity you'll have the chance to practise saying these short forms with Finn.
To do
In this listening and speaking activity, all you have to do is listen to Finn and repeat when he tells you to. There are gaps in the audio for you to speak in. Listen as many times as you like. There is a transcript, but it's best just to listen as carefully as possible - don't worry too much about how the words are spelt.
Listen to the audio and complete the activity

Hi this is Finn: here are some common spoken short forms. So, repeat after me.
Firstly, going to is… gonna, gonna.
And want to is… wanna, wanna.
Now, what are you or what do you is... whatcha, whatcha.
Don't know is... dunno, dunno.
Ok, now got to or got a is... gotta, gotta.
Now, the next one, give me, is... gimme, gimme.
Now, let me is... lemme, lemme.
And finally, have to is... hafta, hafta.
Great, now it's time to try some sentences. Okay? So repeat the whole sentence after me.
Whatcha wanna do? Whatcha wanna do?
I dunno, I hafta check my diary. I dunno, I hafta check my diary.
I gotta go home now. I gotta go home now.
I hafta study tonight. I hafta study tonight.
Lemme think about it Lemme think about it.
Great. Well done. And that's it. I hafta go now - so I hope this practice has helped you. Bye.
End of Session 1
That's it for this session. We hope you've enjoyed practising these short forms. In Session 2 we're looking at this unit's grammar - multi-word verbs. Don't let us down - join us and keep up with this useful area of grammar!
