Activity 1

By this time next week...

... I'll have made my future plans!

BBC Learning English went out onto the streets of London to find out about people's future plans. The people we spoke to used the future perfect tense in their answers, just for you.

By the end of this activity, you'll have listened to three different people, and completed a quiz!

To do

Have a listen to Aly, Chris and Robin, and then do the quiz to test how much you understood. Take a look at the vocabulary box if you need some help with tricky words.

Chris

Hello, my name's Chris and I work with students from all over the world, welcoming them when they come to London for the first time. By the end of this month I will have met students from many countries who've arrived to study in London, and they will have begun their courses and begun to build their life in London.

I love to lock myself in a room with a piano and send everybody else away, and by the end of next year, I'll have been playing for 20 years, and I will also have maybe made my way through most of Bach's keyboard works.

Aly

Hello, I'm Aly and I'm a children's nurse…

Nursing is a very challenging job, it's also very rewarding. I specialise in children and it's nice to see them get better and the difference you can make and just seeing them smile.

By the end of this month, I will have been unemployed for a month – by the end of this year I hope to be employed.

I love travelling and in five years' time I hopefully will have visited Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Australia. I've been to Thailand already this year and I absolutely loved it and it's somewhere I really want to go back to, and I've always wanted to go to Australia and New Zealand to visit them because they look beautiful.

Robin

Hi, my name's Robin. I'm an electrician from Australia. I'm here in Europe travelling and using London as like a hub. So I work in London, and then every three months I travel a couple of weeks here and there through all the different countries in Europe. By this time next year I will have hopefully seen most of the Scandinavian countries, I'll've been through Germany, Italy, France… So I can get a broader sense of what Europe's like and all the different cultures, and experience, explore, meet new people and have fun while I do it.

Take note - hopefully, maybe

Did you notice these sentences?

  • I will also have maybe made my way through most of Bach's keyboard works...
  • in five years' time I hopefully will have visited Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Australia...
  • By this time next year I will have hopefully seen most of the Scandinavian countries...

When we use the future perfect to talk about plans, we're not always completely sure that our plans will actually happen! That's life. To show this, we often use words like hopefully, might, or maybe. They can be used before will, before have or before the past participle.

Practice makes (future) perfect!
