‘I feared I would drown in my bedroom’

Experts are warning that more people could experience mental health problems due to climate change.Research shows that the conditions for extreme weather events like floods and typhoons are made more likely by climate change and may contribute to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and depression.

Helen Berry, Honorary Professor of climate change and mental health at the University says it’s “impossible to overstate the impact of climate change unchecked will have on our mental health”.

Mitzi Jonelle Tan, who lives in the Philippines, has experienced numerous typhoons. She told BBC Minute’s Olivia Le Poidevin how, what she describes as ‘climate trauma’ has caused her to have panic attacks and anxiety.
