Wakanda has Black Panther, Senegal has Sandale-man
Black Panther has shattered stereotypes and smashed global box office records. Critics have praised the film for challenging western clichés about Africa but a Senegalese filmmaker says African cinema won't benefit from its success.
He wants more recognition for local superheroes like Sandale-man, who fights crime in Senegal thanks to his powerful sandal throw.
For co-director Jean Jacques Toué, what started out as a joke became a tool for local representation. He regrets that there isn’t funding for African cinema.
