BBC to broadcast The Open golf from Royal Birkdale


BBC Sport will show live and exclusive television coverage of the 137th Open Golf Championship from Royal Birkdale, from Thursday 17 July to Sunday 20 July 2008.

 

Presenters Gary Lineker and Hazel Irvine will cover all the action at the challenging links course, near Southport, Merseyside.

 

Expert commentary and analysis will be delivered by Peter Alliss, Ken Brown, Sam Torrance, Mark James and Wayne Grady.

 

More than 38 hours of coverage will be broadcast over the four-day competition.

 

This will start on BBC Two from 9.00am to 7.15pm on Thursday 17 and Friday 18 July, and on BBC One from 10.00am on Saturday 19 July.

 

Sunday's coverage begins on BBC Two at 11.00am, before switching to BBC One at 2.30pm.

 

Viewers can also look forward to Golf: The Open Preview on BBC Two on Wednesday 16 July from 11.20pm until midnight.

 

In addition, comprehensive interactive coverage will be provided on BBCi, via the red button on digital television, from 9.00am to 7.00pm each day.

 

Viewers will be able to access a live leaderboard, keep up to date with all the latest Open news with interviews and comment, as well as having the option to watch holes 16, 17 and 18 as players reach the climax of their rounds.

 

Following live coverage, a highlights loop will run throughout the night.

 

Golf fans can also follow all the action online at bbc.co.uk/golf.

 

BBC Radio 5 Live will bring listeners more coverage of the Open than ever before, with four days of live golf action plus all the build-up and previews ahead of the tournament.

 

Ryder Cup player Andrew Coltrart, former Ryder Cup captain Bernard Gallacher, former US tour player Jay Townsend and European tour favourite Mark Roe join 5 Live presenters John Inverdale and Mark Pougatch.

 

Iain Carter heads up the commentary team, and with him are John Murray, Mark Pougatch, Clare Balding, Russell Fuller, Conor McNamara and Vassos Alexander.

 

On Thursday 17 and Friday 18 July, Mark Pougatch co-presents 5 Live Breakfast, from 6 to 9am, live from Royal Birkdale, covering the early action.

 

Then, from 9am, John Inverdale presents live commentary throughout the day with all the stories, interviews and analysis, taking us through until 7pm.

 

On Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 July John Inverdale presents 5 Live Sport from noon, live from the course, with all the action across the weekend's final two rounds.

 

All the build-up to the event will be on 5 Live Sport every night of Open week from 7pm.

 

In a special preview show on Wednesday 16 July, Russell Fuller will be live from Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club, a mile from the Open venue, with a panel of big names including former Ryder Cup captain Mark James and a studio audience to debate what will happen over the next four days.
