BBC Writers' Academy opens its doors

The BBC Writers' Academy is today inviting applications for a place on its unique training programme which offers writers the chance to hone their skills alongside the very best in British industry talent.

The BBC is the only broadcaster to train writers to write television drama, and the writing course is the only one in the world that guarantees the opportunity to work on prime time television.

The Academy's role is to discover the next generation of writers for BBC One' s flagship drama series and then develop them to work across the entire range of BBC's drama output. This will be the third time that the Academy has run since its inaugural course in 2005.

Successful applicants will enjoy guest lectures from leading British writers such as: Tony Jordan, Jed Mercurio and Dominic Minghella, alongside presentations from leading directors Bharat Nalluri and Dearbhla Walsh. There will also be workshops in all aspects of television production.

Since the Academy last opened its doors, John Yorke, Controller, BBC Drama Production, is proud to have seen the scheme go from strength to strength:

"The scheme is now a major gateway into the industry and previous graduates have gone on to play key roles on series such as Casualty, EastEnders and Holby City. As a public service broadcaster it's a unique service that only the BBC can provide and it's fantastic that they continue to support it."

The initial course will last for 13-weeks, during which each writer will be commissioned to write an episode of Doctors. If their Doctors episode is green-lit for broadcast, each writer will rotate across EastEnders, Casualty and Holby City until the end of the 15-month period.

For more information and to apply, applicants should visit bbc.co.uk/jobs. The closing date is 14 May 2007.

Notes to Editors

The BBC Writers' Academy is a joint venture between BBC Drama Production and BBC Creativity and Audiences.
