BBC Young Musician 2006 - the final
The Final of BBC Young Musician 2006 will be held at The Sage Gateshead on
Saturday 20 May at 2.00pm, and is broadcast on BBC TWO at 5.20pm the same
day.
The BBC's biennial classical music competition is aimed at discovering future
classical stars and exceptional musical talent and has become firmly established
as Britain's premier classical music competition for young people.
Twenty-five
talented young musicians are in the semi-finals, broadcast on BBC FOUR in
the week leading up to the final (Saturday 13 to Thursday 18 May).
Five of these
talented musicians will perform in the final, which is supported by the Tabor
Foundation and will be performed in front of a sold-out audience.
Finalists will
be announced on Friday 19 May.
The winner receives the coveted title BBC Young Musician of the Year and a BBC
Young Musician Travel Award to promote his/her musical studies as well as a
Waterford Crystal trophy.
In addition, the Walter Todds Bursary is awarded to a
performer who does not reach the final but shows great promise.
And the
inaugural Tabor Foundation Award is given to a competitor to further his/her
musical development and help them realise their full potential.
The BBC Young Musician of the Year competition for keyboard, string, brass and
woodwind players was launched in 1978 by Humphrey Burton and the late Walter
Todds of the BBC's then Television Music Department.
Percussion was introduced
as a fifth category in 1994.
Many previous winners and finalists have gone on to
develop major international careers, among them Stephen Hough, Thomas Adès and
Nicola Benedetti.
Nicola Benedetti - A Winning Story, an intimate portrait of the brilliant young
violinist who was named BBC Young Musician of the Year in 2004, will be
broadcast on BBC TWO on Saturday 13 May at 5.40pm.
