Aziz moves to his new job, based in Nottingham, from BBC News in London, where he is currently Weekend Editor in charge of BBC
ONE bulletins and BBC News 24 coverage.
Aziz joined the BBC in 1989 as a trainee at BBC
World Service radio. After five years there he moved to BBC
World TV working on projects including co-ordinating the coverage for the 50th anniversary
of the Second World War, and working as Editor of the United States Election programmes
for BBC World and BBC News 24.
In 2001 he joined Breakfast News as
its Deputy Editor, and in 2004, after working as a Strand Editor
on BBC News 24, he moved to his current job as Weekend Editor.
Of the appointment, Andy Griffee, Controller of BBC English
Regions, says: "I'm delighted to welcome someone with a such strong track record
in different areas of news to the East Midlands as the region's new Head.
"Aziz
has a wealth of experience that he will be bringing with him and we all look
forward to working with him when he takes up his new role."
Aziz said: "I'm really excited by the prospect of leading regional programming in the East Midlands. There is a fantastic wealth of talent across this region working in radio, television and online.
"We are the forefront of change in the BBC and I'm looking forward to working with the team to make programmes and services that are relevant all our audiences in the digital age."
A start date has still to be confirmed. Aziz takes over from Mike
Bettison, Managing Editor of BBC Radio Nottingham, who has been acting Head of BBC East Midlands.
