David Jordan, the BBC's Chief Adviser, Politics, has been appointed as the corporation's new Controller, Editorial Policy.

David succeeds Stephen Whittle, who retires from the BBC in December.

David Jordan started at the BBC in 1988, becoming Deputy Editor of Panorama in 1990, followed by his appointment as Editor of flagship political programme On the Record from 1992 to 2003.

David Jordan said: "I look forward to the opportunity of developing Editorial Policy's partnership with programme makers to continue the tradition of robust, creative, cutting edge programmes."

Deputy Director-General Mark Byford added: "David's experience, wisdom and judgement will be key assets in his new role.

"He will be a strong supporter of courage, flair and creativity and he will lead an Editorial Policy team focussed on helping programme makers achieve their aims within a robust editorial framework."

David Jordan will take up his new post on 16 December 2005.
