On Wednesday 6 July, from 7.00 to 8.00pm, BBC Radio Cornwall will link up with an African radio station - MCR FM in Maputo, Mozambique.

As part of Africa Lives on the BBC the stations' listeners will discuss the issues of tourism and preservation of cultural heritage in their respective countries.

Assistant Editor Daphne Skinnard is thrilled to be linking with MCR - with the help of the BBC World Service's specialist interactive programme for Africa, Africa Live!

She says: "Every day of every week of every year BBC Radio Cornwall tells the unique personal stories of our audience.

"Twinning with MCR in Maputo allows us to explore the links between Cornwall and Mozambique and connect two audiences that have some surpising links and some amazing stories."

MCR presenter Charles Mangwiro says: "It's exciting for us to think that we can just talk with another part of the world and learn from each other."

Anyone who would like to take part in the discussion should call the station in advance on 01872 275421 and ask for Daphne.

Notes to Editors

The BBC World Service, English for Africa programme Africa Live! and BBC local radio stations will create five days of conversation between communities in the UK and Africa from 4 July.

This ground-breaking initiative is part of Africa Lives on the BBC.

Solomon Mugera the Africa Live! presenter will be on the ground at BBC stations in Cornwall, Derby, Leicester, Manchester and Three Counties talking to people about the issues of the day.

Simultaneously, in Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda and Mozambique on-the-ground reporters will discuss the same issues with local people in the markets, the schools and the streets.

Radio, digital and satellite listeners in the UK and local radio station audiences in Africa will simultaneously hear and be able to engage with broadcasts.

The unique aspect of this initiative is that five communities will unite in debate on air on issues affecting both their lives.

The debates will compare, explore and challenge the issues raised and for the first time really reveal the similarities and differences between Africa and the UK.

The relationship will continue with several BBC national and local radio stations establishing a twinning relationship with an FM partner in Africa.

These include: BBC Radio Wales - Radio Lesotho; BBC Three Counties Radio - Kiss FM in Mwanza, Tanzania; BBC Radio Leicester - Radio 1 in Kampala, Uganda; BBC Radio Shropshire - Breeze FM in Zambia; BBC GMR (Manchester) - Ray Power, Nigeria; BBC Radio Cornwall - MCR - Maputo Corridor Radio Mozambique; BBC WM (West Midlands) - Kapital in Kumasi Ghana.

Radio Cornwall - 103.9 & 95.2 FM.
