The actress, who played Sufia Karim - one of the first key Asian roles in Eastenders - also combines the roles of writer/producer with various voluntary work commitments.

Her first episode of Silver Street is Monday 4 July.

Speaking of her new role Rani said: "I'm tremendously excited to be taking part in Silver Street which has gone from strength to strength in just a year.

"It's great to be part of a new cultural project that really benefits and develops the Asian writing community in the UK providing opportunities for dozens of new writers every year."

James Peries, Editor of Silver Street, said: "Rani brings a wealth of talent and experience to the role of Surinder and Silver Street continues to attract top talent to its ranks.

"It's great to see the drama grow and develop as we enter our second year."
