BBC Scotland Interactive to extend Island Blogging project

BBC Scotland's interactive Island Blogging project, which was launched in the North Argyll islands in December 2003, is to be extended to include all the islands of Scotland.

The project will be expanded initially in late June in the Argyll and Clyde Islands (Gigha, Jura, Islay, Arran, Bute, Sanday and the Holy Isle) with an outreach tour by BBC interactive teams who will run local workshops on how to blog.

Further tours will then take place between June and October in the Western Isles (Skye, Lewis, Harris, Uist, Benbecula, Eriskay and Barra) and the Northern Isles of Orkney and Shetland.

Blogging is creating your own weblog or blog by writing short entries on a website.

It has become a huge phenomenon in recent years - United States news sites, for example, are now making an impact on mainstream news broadcasting.

The organisers want island residents to come on to the website to tell their story, discuss local issues, communicate with others and enjoy the service.

The scheme will also enjoy a partnership with the Scottish Islands Network which seeks to publicise the interests and strengthen the voice of island communities within governmental and policy-making bodies.

The weblogs can be viewed on the Where I Live site at bbc.co.uk/islandblogging.
