Richard Deverell has been appointed
Chief Operating Officer for CBBC by the incoming Controller, Alison
Sharman, it was announced today (24 May 2005).
Currently Head of BBC News Interactive, a central part
of Richard's new role will be to build CBBC's role in a digital future
as well as developing key partnerships both in and outside of the BBC.
Alison Sharman said: "Richard has made a huge success
of News Interactive and is regarded as one of the BBC's most respected
innovators. I am thrilled that he is joining CBBC, where he will play
a central role developing the content and ideas which will put the department
at the forefront of the digital broadcasting world."
Speaking of his appointment, Richard said: "I'm delighted
to be joining CBBC at such an exciting time. I believe there is a huge
opportunity for the BBC to take a global lead in providing outstanding
content for children in the digital age and I'm very much looking forward
to being part of the team that delivers this".
Richard has been in his current role since 2000 where
he has been responsible for all BBC News' interactive and on-demand
services including BBC News Online.
Previous to that, he was Controller of Strategy and
Marketing with BBC News.
He will take up the new post on Monday 20 June.

Alison Sharman, currently the BBC's Controller of Daytime,
was appointed Controller of CBBC last month and takes up the new role
on 20 June.
CBBC is the generic term for the BBC's children's programming
and online services, and incorporates:
CBBC and CBeebies programming on BBC ONE and BBC TWO
The CBBC Channel and CBeebies, the BBC's subscription-free, dedicated
children's digital channels, which launched in February 2002.
CBBC is aimed at six to 12-year-olds, and CBeebies is aimed at pre-school
children
CBBC online and interactive services.
