TV DRAMA

BBC buys UK rights to Stephen King series

The BBC has acquired exclusive UK TV rights from Sony Pictures Television International to broadcast the much anticipated new series, Stephen King's Kingdom Hospital.

Described as a "cross between ER and The Shining", the series stars Ed Begley Jr, Andrew McCarthy and Academy Award nominees Diane Ladd and Bruce Davison.

The supernatural drama is set in a modern hospital built on the site of an ancient mill and the Old Kingdom hospital, both destroyed by fire, where ghosts from the past invade the present.

It is based on cult Director Lars Von Trier's 1994 and 1997 Danish TV mini-series, Riget (The Kingdom).

The director is Craig Baxley, who also directed King's highly rated Stephen King's Rose Red.

Announcing the deal BBC Controller of Acquisitions, George McGhee, said: "We're very pleased that the BBC has exclusive first UK rights to this smart and edgy series from Stephen King, the master of suspense. I think the series will be a great addition to BBC TWO and THREE schedules."

Written entirely by King, series one will air in the United States with a 90 minutes premiere in February 2004.

The BBC will broadcast Stephen King's Kingdom Hospital later in the year.

All the BBC's digital services are now available on Freeview, the new free-to-view digital terrestrial television service, as well as on satellite and cable.

Freeview offers the BBC's eight television channels, interactive services from BBCi, as well as 11 national BBC radio networks.
