Victoria Baths' chance to bathe in glory

The Victoria Baths in Manchester is one of the buildings to feature in Restoration, a major new BBC TWO series highlighting the threat to the national heritage.

The series, starting in August, will give viewers a chance to make their mark on history by voting to save one of the featured architectural treasures.

Hosted by comedian and passionate conservationist Griff Rhys Jones, Restoration will take viewers to every corner of the UK celebrating an extraordinary heritage and uncovering hidden historical gems poised on the brink of extinction.

The buildings will be brought back to life through the memories of people who used them and through local residents and conservation groups who are fighting to save them for future generations.

Ten one-hour programmes will each be devoted to a geographical area of the UK and will focus on three endangered properties.

The Victoria Baths on Hathersage Road in Longsight - described when it opened in 1906 as a "water palace of which every citizen of Manchester is proud" - remained at the heart of the local community until closing in 1993.

The stunning Edwardian building will be championed by a celebrity advocate in the North West edition of Restoration.

At the end of each programme viewers will decide which one of the buildings featured will go forward to the final.

The series will then climax with an exciting live event where the public will determine which of the ten finalists most merits restoration.
