Were you born to be a journalist? - bbcmundo.com and Clarin.com name Argentina's winner

BBC World Service and Argentina's Clarín.com have announced the winner of the competition for Argentina's most talented young online journalist.

Eugenia Mitchelstein, aged 23, won "Were You Born to be a Journalist" with her multimedia feature, "Tell the world about your Argentina".

More than 5,000 people registered to take part in the contest, which ran on BBC's Spanish-language website, bbcmundo.com and its online partner in Argentina, Clarín.com.

Eugenia was selected by a transatlantic panel of judges: Senior Producer of bbcmundo.com, Xabier Celaya, Editing Manager of Clarín newspaper, Roberto Pablo Guareschi, and Argentinian journalists and writer, Martín Caparrós.

She was praised for her journalistic talent and excellent use of multimedia tools. Her article concentrated on the re-opening of Argentinean factories by the workers who continued production despite the economic crisis.

Eugenia will spend one month at the BBC World Service in London, working alongside bbcmundo.com journalists in January 2003.

The prize includes air tickets, accommodation and expenses. Her entry will be posted on bbcmundo.com and Clarín.com websites.

Marcelo Franco, Content Director of Clarín.com, said: "I think that the success of this competition resides not only in the huge response that we received, but also in the relevance of the entries.

"Future professional journalists demonstrated their concern about the current Argentinian situation, and they made a skilful use of multimedia tools to communicate their message to the world."

Xabier Celaya added: "The entries were of a high standard, and making the final decision was very difficult.

"However, sifting through them was very gratifying. It is great to know that there is a whole generation of young journalists who share a real passion and concern about their country.

"With young people like these, one should be optimistic about Argentina's the future."

Nine runner-up prizes - personal organisers and radio sets - have been awarded to: Darío Artiguenave, Cecilia Sánchez, Miguel Velárdez, Eduardo Tarrico Villafañe, María Rivadeneira, Juan Rosso Cabezas, Hernán Katz, Julieta Valente and María Mierez.
