Top of the Pops Awards get interactive

From Gareth Gates to Eminem, Kylie to the Kittens – at the Top of the Pops Awards 2002, viewers can vote for their wannabe winners via digital interactive TV for the first time, as well as by SMS, phone or the BBCi website bbc.kongjiang.org/www.bbc.co.uk.

From now and for the next three weeks, digital viewers of Friday night's Top of the Pops and Top of the Pops Saturday will be able to cast their vote live during the programme to choose their favourite pop stars for the Top of the Pops Awards 2002.

Viewers of Digital Satellite and Digital Cable can "Press Red" on their remote controls to vote for the nominated acts.

Eight voting categories appear on screen including Top Album of the Year, Top Dance Act, Top Newcomer, Top Pop Act, Top R&B Act, Top Rock Act, Top Single and Top Tour.

Viewers will be able to submit votes once a day for each of the categories, and the winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on 29 November 2002, to be broadcast on BBC ONE.

Freeview viewers will be able to access a text based service offering category voting details while visitors to the BBCi website will also be able to vote in the eight categories by accessing bbc.kongjiang.org/www.bbc.co.uk/totp.

Scott Gronmark, Head of Interactive TV for BBCi said: "Interactive TV adds a new dimension to viewer participation alongside telephone and internet voting.

"The 'i-vote' has already played an important role in giving the BBCi audience a chance to voice their opinions and share with others their thoughts.

"I do not doubt that this year's Top of the Pops awards will continue that trend."
