BBCi
TV DRAMA

BBCi Spy

To coincide with the major BBC ONE drama Spooks, BBCi web users are being given the chance to become a secret agent.

Wannabe spooks can sign up for vetting and training for access to a fictional world set within the UK's domestic intelligence service - MI5.

Once inside the MI5 Extranet, accessed through bbc.co.uk/spooks, the raw recruits will be mentored by Danny, a character from the TV show. The agents can examine case files, leave and receive messages, call for surveillance of suspicious targets and get fresh orders from Danny.

Through a series of tip-offs, leads and an ocean of red herrings, BBCi agents can uncover a lethal plot to attack the UK. Close viewing of the TV series is advised as it will contain useful clues.

The interactive story is the brainchild of the BBC's Fictionlab, a department tasked with developing interactive drama.

Jamie Cason, Editor of Drama and Entertainment Online, says: "Spooks interactive represents a major departure for us. A lot of our output is about programme support. We're best known for sites such as EastEnders, Top of the Pops and Ab Fab which give fans magazine style coverage of their favourite shows. With Spooks we have worked closely with the TV producers to create an interactive experience which immerses the audience in the narrative rather than reporting on it."

Jane Featherstone, series producer for Kudos, the independent company which created the TV series, said: "We think we've got a really exciting and distinctive TV drama. Spooks takes the spy genre back to the edge for BBC ONE. The interactive side adds a fascinating new dimension. The audience has a unique window on to the world we've created and through it will engage with the characters and their stories on a much deeper level. What's wonderful is the way the TV series and website are so interwoven. They send the audience on a very unusual journey."

Notes to Editors

Spooks is a six-part series for BBC ONE, beginning on Monday 13 May at 9.00pm. More about the series.
