Springwatch: One louder than other nature shows
Twenty-five years ago this year Harry Shearer, Michael McKean and Christopher Guest starred in one of the funniest movies of all time, This Is Spinal Tap, a spoof documentary about a fictional heavy metal band called Spinal Tap.
In one scene the guitarist Nigel (Christopher Guest) is showing the documentary maker (Rob Reiner) his new amp on which the volume controls go all the way up to 11...
Nigel: The numbers all go to eleven. Look, right across the board, eleven, eleven, eleven and...
Director: Oh, I see. And most amps go up to ten?
Nigel: Exactly.
Director: Does that mean it's louder? Is it any louder?
Nigel: Well, it's one louder, isn't it? It's not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be playing at ten. You're on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you're on ten on your guitar. Where can you go from there? Where?
Director: I don't know.
Nigel: Nowhere. Exactly. What we do is, if we need that extra push over the cliff, you know what we do?
Director: Put it up to eleven.
Nigel: Eleven. Exactly. One louder.
Director: Why don't you just make ten louder and make ten be the top number and make that a little louder?
Nigel: [pause] These go to eleven...
So there I was scanning the Messageboards when I spotted this:
BigRogSound: At last a real example of BBC innovation. I notice the Springwatch webcam volume control goes up to 11. Well done for making those extra dB's available. How do you do it? I can now listen from the other side of the room whilst making a cuppa without difficulty. Thank you to the BBC NoiseBoyz.
Grebelet: Springwatch, it's 1 louder than other nature shows...
Take a look below to see what they're talking about. Obviously the designers of the iPlayer viewer are as keen on Spinal Tap as BigRogSound and Grebelet:
