Media Brief

I'm the BBC's media correspondent and this is my brief selection of what's going on.

Sarah Kennedy has told the Daily Telegraph she was never drunk on her early morning Radio 2 show, which she left earlier this month. She admitted she had done a bad edition in early August, during which she had sounded slurred, but put it down to not having slept the night before. A BBC spokesman said: "It was Sarah's decision to leave the BBC."

The King's Speech, starring Colin Firth as King George VI, has won the main prize at the Toronto Film Festival, reports the BBC. The film also stars Geoffrey Rush as the king's speech therapist, and Helena Bonham Carter as the Queen Mother. It was part-funded by the UK Film Council, which is to be closed by the Government.

Gillian Reynolds says in the Daily Telegraph that the BBC's treatment of children's radio has been shameful, in her review of Radio 4's The Reunion, which brought together the team behind Play School. Even so, she thinks a statement from commercial radio calling on the BBC to do more about children's radio is "a bit rich".

The Financial Times on Monday joined calls [registration required] for the business secretary, Vince Cable, to investigate News Corporation's proposed takeover of BSkyB, arguing that there is a "clear public interest case for doing so". The Guardian reports that this follows a letter to culture secretary Jeremy Hunt from media analyst Claire Enders urging against the takeover.

The Liberal Democrats party conference makes the headlines, as the BBC newspaper review shows.
