Santa's A Scotsman

Richard Melvin

My friend and former BBC colleague Richard Melvin is at it again. You may recall that, during the summer, he experienced a few weeks of global fame when he penned Scotland's unofficial World Cup anthem. This despite the fact that Scotland had not actually qualified for the tournament, but the song was dedicated to Trinidad & Tobago striker Jason Scotland.

His latest work - part of a campaign to sell a board game into the festive market -makes the bold claim that Santa Claus is Scottish. The big man's girth and bad eating habits are cited as the evidence for this.

I particularly enjoyed the line: "too many pies, not enough exercise, of course he's one of us."

So no damaging stereotypes there then.
