Is Nigeria's president fit to govern?

There is just something amazing about Mr Goodluck Jonathan, the people he took over power from always return to take back the office, and they always return in the night secretly to show up in the morning with news all over raising dusts of security, but they never finished the tenure, mr Goodluck always does the handing over, lets watch as this unfolds again, welcome back home mr Yaradua.
God bless the Federal republic of Nigeria.

I honestly feel those behind Mr Yaradua taking over power again are with complete hatred for the country the last time he went for medical check he was brought back without need for ambulance meeting him at the airport, if he loves Nigeria as he claims and also his own life, he should not allow the greed of others soil his name, the only thing he can do for Nigeria is to resign, the country would praise him and thank him he did.
He knows as much as Nigeria knows he is not fit to lead his local government not to mention the entire country

Constitutional turmoil? What a shock, a president who doesn't know when it's time to step down. Until we've verified that Yar'Adua is healthy enough to resume his duties, I'll assume his supporters rushed him back to the country before he was declared unfit by the ministerial envoy that had just coincidentally arrived in Saudi to verify his health the day he left.

Mr president is back? That's great but my word to him is that 'Long Live Nigeria' if his health can't continue this position he should resign and never allow those sychophants around him push him into early grave. But this sneak-out and sneak-in of a thing is another issue that bothers every right thinking citizen of any country let alone Nigerians

Nigerians need to know why Yar'dua did not hand over formally to his assistant but rather left the country at the mercy of political predators. Secondly, the people would like to know why he was rushed home just after his assistant has taken over power. Is he protecting his selfish interest or truly thinking of the good of the nation?

Mr. Jonathan has been a good boy to the president, unlike Atiku who wanted to overthrow his boss, Obasanjo. Why is he been treated like a leper?

Nigeria, a country with such vast oil resources the people could benefit substantially & the country could prosper dramatically. However, because of misrule, corruption & plain stupidity the revenue does not filter down to the people. Instead it is diverted into the pockets of the political elite. This trend is symptomatic of what is wrong with much of Sub-Saharan Africa. Corrupt politicians & inept governance.

I feel only the residents of Nigeria know for sure whether he is a suitable President, I hope for the people I know from that country that their President is up to the job both physically and mentally to help Nigeria to advance itself with good leadership.

It is absolute wise to be happy about the return of the president(Umaru Musa Yar'dua). The fact is that the president should resign according 2 his health status he is not fit or capable of retaking the power,so i think the vice-president(Goodluck Jonathan) should continue as the acting president. There is arguably, no longer, a constitutionally sound reason or predicate upon which to impeach President YarAdua. And, now that he is back, if he is healthy and fit, there is no longer a reason for Vice President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to remain as the Acting President. The circumstances of the preceding 93 days, have changed and reverted to "normal" and so, Mr. Jonathan from now on, will only do duties assigned to him by Mr. YarAdua. We may now overlook the fact that Mr. YarAdaua for 93 days, abdicated his throne and was intransigent and recalcitrant, when he should just have complied with constitutionally mandated and stipulated procedure and processes.

However, there should be no mistake about it, that, now that Mr. YarAdua is back to presidential duties, all are reminded, that he remains our president and national symbol. And that he is, was always our substantive president, who was taken away, temporarily, by personal medical condition which had led to a national controversy, now he is back to work and that should end the brouhahas. Mr. Jonathan from now on, will only do, or carry out, duties assigned to him by Mr. YarAdua

President YarAdua swore to uphold and defend the constitution and now is the time to demonstrate that commitment. This is also time to act magnanimously and with malice towards none. Our servant leader, hopefully, is now found new energy from his medical vacation, should hunker down to do the presidential heavy lifting Mr. YarAdua, if he is now well and fit to resume work, he must refrain himself, put restraints on others, not to hound anyone on account of debates which surrounded his departure and long stay in Saudi Arabia, a stay which generated abundance controversy. If he is well enough to resume presidential duties, he must singularly focus on those duties and not waste valuable time seeking retributions and vengeful vendettas against anyone who became restive as a result of Mr. YarAdua long stay outside Nigeria, from work.

It is better that he is back home in full perfect health, imperfect, impaired or worse, than, remaining and sticking out like a sore thumb in Saudi Arabia, sticking out as monumental for embarrassment. There is now, no a constitutionally sound reason to impeach President YarAdua, unless there emerge an apparent reason or there is a subsequent affront against our constitution.

The hurried return of sick president Yaradua signals the fear the hausa/fulani oligarchy are facing. these men think that power belongs to them and no other person is elligible to govern nigeria. As yet, we have no news of President Yar'Adua's overall medical condition, so any comment on his fitness to resume his presidential duties would be speculation.
Consider, however, the example of our own Prime Minister, Anthony Eden, at the time of the 1956 Suez crisis. Severe complications of gall bladder surgery had left Eden weak, jaundiced and ill. He was prescribed the amphetamine Benzedrine, whose side-effects are insomnia, restlessness and mood swings, which were thought to have affected his judgement significantly.

I think President Yar'Adua case can be liken to King Saul in the Bible,the thirst for power either by his personal ambition or by the same forces that has held Nigerian backward for the last 50 years might erase his foot prints from the sand of time. Personally I feel the President should resign and take more of advisory role to Acting President Jonathan.

Am estatic that Mr President is back! Hooray! Who is deceiving who? How can our president come back on the cloak of disguise? Mr. Yara Adua was elected, albeit through a flawed democratic process to serve a term in office with Goodluck Jonathan as his deputy. Why some Nigerians feel a palace coup, which is arising because of the president’s ill health, will usher in a more credible government is beyond me! There are processes for passing on or sharing power and elsewhere in the world, they are usually followed with the unity of the nation as topmost priority.

Yara Adua's absence and ill health has perhaps being a blessing in disguise for Nigeria as an entity. It has exposed those who will tear it apart without a second thought if given the chance.

Who invited the war mongering trio to the awards in Abuja? The security agencies in Nigeria ought to check whether this individual had a motive or is just plain stupid, in either case such a person should not be allowed to head an organization that controls public opinion.

I think the reported arrival of Mr Presidents is nothing but a hoax to mislead and cause confusion in th country. Why should our president be smuggled into his beloved country in the night, unheralded. Like many African Countries, Nigeria is another country that has since self rule was achieved fallen into the trap of Fraud, Waste, Tribal Disputes and a people that live in desperate poverty.

What Nigeria needs like so many other African Countries is a Government that will exploit its wealth for the benefit of all it's people and bring the country into the 21st Century... unlikely to ever happen though!

The news of the bringing back of Umar Yar Adua, President of Nigeria to the country by an early morning plane which landed at a Nigeria's airport, after almost 90 days of receiving treatment in a Saudi-Arabia hospital has no much significance in altering the state of affairs in Nigeria regarding governance.

As soon as the plane landed, if everything was okay with President Yar Adua health wise, a world press conference ought to have been addressed immediately at the airport. Then, in the next 3-5 days after receiving full briefing from his cabinet on how things went in his absence regarding state of the nation, he can then make a nationwide television broadcast.

The situation obtained was that a plane landed and someone was moved into a waiting ambulance and driven away. As far as I can say, Goodluck Jonathan remains the Acting President until the President convinces the nation of his preparedness to resume office from his 'abscondment'.

The future with political governance, in Nigeria, no doubt is suspicious and untrustworthy, especially if the conduct of the Federal cabinet members is to be reckoned with. Above all, Yar Adua has disappointed the whole nation and his attitude in the last 90days has betrayed his much prophessed 'servant-leader' calibre he presented to be.

Like all African countries, Nigeria is corrupt so of course Mr Yar'Adua should not be in power.

If any proof were ever needed that the state of near anarchy and paralysis that has obtained in Nigeria for the last three months benefited a small cabal, then surely Yar Adua's clandestine return home in the dead of night is that proof. To think that a President whose by word has been adherence to "Rule of Law" and "due process" has chosen to return home in these circumstances after plunging the nation into a constitutional crisis for the last three months says a lot about Yar Adua's and the cabal's patriotism. This whole ridiculous saga will have been laughable were it not for the fact that the lives of ordinary Nigerians are at stake here. 1. Why should he return in the dead of the night?

3. Why return when he could have stayed back and recovered sufficiently?

With the whole senario starting from the day Mr President left the shores of this wonderful country for medical check up, till today he sneaked in, so many things have happened and the CABAL believes that everyone is being fooled. It is a coincidence that at time the delegates from the FEC went to greet the the King of Saudi Arabia and further brief Mr President, was the time the President got healed and sneaked into the country. The CABAL should remember the days of Abacha.The dance drama ended in one day and the whole Nigerians saw the people that danced to the drums of the spirit. The beating of the spiritual drums has started again and some people are already dancing. They should know that ''THERE is MORE TO THE WEATHER THAN THE RAIN WE ARE SEEING''. Mr President should mind his health and forget about the sychophants around him.

This was one of the easiest of any political challenges that any politician could face. But Yar’Adua of Nigeria decided to make it complicated by making secret of his illness and refusing to keep the Nigerian people in the loop. I am sure Nigerians, like any other people in the world,understand that anyone can fall ill. Had Yar’Adua been open with them as much as he could, and did what the constitution required him to do under the circumstances, the people could have just kept on praying for him and today, it would have been a trouble free reentry and fit to take back his job without creating any bad feelings.

We are talking of the President of a Nation, sneaking in, in an ambulance unceremoniously. What makes us believe is President Yar'adua that was flown in, or his corpse was the one transported via ambulance. I believe, if he a discharged President from an Hospital, He wont be moved into an ambulance. this is an indication that, some people somewhere are willing to truncate the peace we are enjoying already with Ag. President Jonathan. If by tomorrow, Thursday, we did not see latest photograph or video shot of him on media, i ll be left with no choice than to believe,

2. President Yar'adua corpse was flown into the country.
3. Some people are planning to truncate this country and to make governance terrible for the Ag. President.

The President is said to be having heart and kidney problems. The media has described an inflammation of the membrane around the heart.I think the President has severe kidney failure which can cause this heart condition called uremic pericarditis. This is an absolute indication for dialysis or transplant. I suspect he has been receiving dialysis and may have received a transplant already. Then again political pressures may have caused him to return to Nigeria before a transplant. He would not be the first head of state to stay in power while receiving such treatments.How well he does will most likely depend on what caused his kidney failure in the first place.

The country and all the past leaders has failed so many generations to say the least .I lived in Nigeria from age 1-16 in University of Ife Campus , then we had Electricity , good road , water and all neccesities of life . Nigeria's problem is not Yaraduas making. It is an entrenched culture where the leader is held hostage at all times by a cabal. Abacha did not realise it until he was in the grave. Babangida found out late in the day "when all arrows were pointing at him" Shagari did not know how much power he had ceeded to Umaru Dikko and the Akinloye's of this world until the soldier boys came calling. Even as shrewed as Obasanjo is, there are so many things I am sure he would love to have done better than giving us an ailing President. The Nigeria President is always held hostage. So for poor Yaradua, its sad that the elements that have held him hostage would not even allow him to find peace to heal himself. For a man that needed just a signature to ceed power to his VP, spend as much time as he can getting his health back without anybody bordering when he is going to come back, the poor guy got entangled in a web of hostage taking at his most vulnerable point in his life. A time he is battling for his dear life. I am sure if the guy had been asked the question " do you want to stay alive or die while you are the President of Nigeria. I am sure he would have choosen the the former. He would have prefered to remain alive and go back to his village in Kastina and continue to enjoy the peace and traquility that life would provide him out there.
What Nigerian needs now is the decentralisation of power from the centre so that the Presidency would have very little incentive for people to want to take it hostage. I pray that YarAdua gets well. But Please Mr President go back home to Kastina and get well, so that you can be there to enjoy the fruit of your labour for more years to come.

Is Yar’Adua fit to govern? He needs to come and tell the people what he thinks. Just saying he is back and he is here but the VP can carry on for now is not enough. After 3 months in Saudi hospital and he is claiming he has been discharged from the hospital, then he must be ready to resume work. He must face the nation and let the people assess the state of his health.

Why Nigerian politicians are hidding Yar'Adua from the poeple who voted him in power? We are in a democratic era, but the politicians are treating us as if we are in a secrect socaity. Since Yar'Adua left Nigeria three months ago, no one has ever sees him, not even when he returns home. What are they hidden? If he can not addrees the nation as he set foot on Nigeria soil, then something is wrong and the whole nation needs to know.

I don’t think it matters, though I imagine there’s some anxiety in both legislative houses; after all, there was
- a resolution last week, making Goodluck Jonathan Acting President,
- a meeting of some members of the house & senate deliberating impeachment proceedings against the president.
- an agreement that the Government will only fall back to Section 143 (impeachment) if the council does not act in line with Section 144 (incapacitation) of the Constitution. The decision to await the action of the Executive Council was taken because Mr Yar’Adua may in fact have been too far gone to know what he was doing, even though he "appeared" to grant an interview to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and also signed the Supplementary Budget. Were these actions fabricated? Did the President in fact carry them out, and if so, did he know what he was doing?

The Senate leadership has consistently denied any plans to start impeachment (Section 143) proceedings against President Yar’Adua if the Executive Council of the Federation does not declare the President incapable of discharging his duties (Section 144).
One way or the other I feel Yardua is finished as President of Nigeria.

Maintaining the peace in the Niger delta may be the easier for Jonathan to do. He is Ijaw, the dominant ethnic group in the region. His appointment will support the delta peace process and recent positive developments there. But MEND said it will cooperate with Goodluck Jonathan only if its demand for local control of the delta’s energy resources is met. MEND’s Jomo Gbomo: “The truth is that we’re not sentimental over the origin of the president. We’re more concerned about any individual that can emancipate the region from five decades of bondage.”

The president should remain in office until it confirmed without a doubt that he can not do his job. There is no time for a power struggle in Nigeria; move forward in destiny. Nigeria is a corrupt state so does it really matter who is in control!

The return into the country of President Umaru Musa Yar’adua in circumstances shrouded in complete secrecy in the early hours of today totally devoid of pomp and ceremony usually accorded to a person of his stature is a confirmed beyond a shadow of doubt that the man is being held hostage by a certain cabal in furtherance of its selfish and devious agenda. I wonder aloud how a man who has been weighed down and emaciated by a life threatening ailment would be removed from his hospital bed in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia flown on an aircraft for more than six gruelling hours and then bundled into an ambulance under heavy security coverage into the presidential villa. It shows that this cabal that has held our president hostage is desperate, mindless and callous. The truth of the matter is that the President is permanently incapacitated from performing his presidential duties. This is what the return of the President in the condition he was brought into the country has confirmed. The suspension of today session of the Executive Council of the Federation which we had expected President Yar’adua to preside over as Chairman has further confirmed that the president cannot perform the functions of his office. Most importantly , the statement issued by the Special Assistant to the President, Olusegun Adeniyi that President Yar’adua has directed that the Vice-President, Goodluck Jonathan should assume office as Acting President is belated, and of no moment. The directive has being over taken by events. It is otiose. This because the National Assembly has already conferred on Jonathan the status of Acting President and he has been exercising these presidential powers to the fullest since then. Some strict constructionist may contend that the National Assembly has no such powers to confer on Jonathan the toga of Acting President but there is doctrine of necessity which invocation which cannot be wished away. President Yar’adua is just striving to save his face by doing what he ought to have done three months ago when he left the shores of this country for medical treatment. I think President Yar’adua was hurriedly brought to the country to scuttle his possible removal from office by the National Assembly as it was strongly rumoured. He wants to eat his cake and have. He wants to remain President while he suffers from permanent incapacitation and infirmity of the mind brought about by his ailment. Those who have held the President hostage for their selfish interest wants to remain relevant in the scheme of affairs because Yar’adua is still constitutionally the President even though Jonathan is the Acting President. Yar’adua will still enjoy and indeed be entitled to all his rights and privileges as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It is sheer power play. However, the Constitution has contemplated this type of situation we have found ourselves. We can take umbrage under Section 144 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 which has laid down the procedure for the removal of a President who has become a liability like Yar’adua. I think the presence of Yar’adua in the country breathing down on necks of the crowd of his loyalists and hawks in the Executive Council of the Federation will be a check on the constitutionalists in the council who wants him removed on ground of his fragile health. This is the calculation of the hawks and loyalists of the ailing President. The truth of the matter is that the Executive Council must be pressured to be alive to its constitutional responsibilities by appointing a panel to examine whether the President is fit to remain in office as President in view of his fragile health which has greatly affected his performance in the last two years. I expect President Yar’adua as a patriot who believes in this country to see reason and throw in the towel in the interest of the peace, well being and stability of this country. Let him call of the bluffs of the hawks around him who are pretending to love him more than his own mother will love him. The country has been bogged down by his ailing for so long. It is the time the country moves on. I will advise him to simply render his letter of resignation forthwith.

I think that if he has full recovered from his ill-health then Umaru Yar'Adua should return as President of Nigeria. Though I do not understand the current political situation in Nigeria. This case reminds me of another when Ariel Sharon was the Israeli President and he had stroke during his time in office, which was sudden and there was no obvious replacement. I think it is always fundamentally important that world leaders health are properly monitored becasue the resulting absence of the person from their office for as a duration like 3 months can result in political uncertainty.

Yar'Dua owes the nation an apology for shirking his responsibilities as a President, to take up a bed in Saudi hospital for treatment without telling the nation. He crawed back home under the darkness of the night. Refusing to use the Presidential jet sent to bring him home. He was rude and ungreatful. After all, 'an absent saint gets no candle.' Since he became the President, he has done nothing for the country, and the fact that he and his Turai believe that it is a private affairs is really annoying. He should never have been a President when he wanted to have a private life. As a President, his ill-health is no longer his private affairs whether he likes it or not. How can he just walked away as if he doesn't care. He brought the nation close to chaos. As far as I am concerned, Yar'Dua needs to look after his health and allow the nation to move on. In a country of over 150 million people, I care less about the return of one man, as long as his return does not hold our country and the other over 149,999,999 people to ransom. On the other hand, Alhaji ‘Baba Go-Slow’ Yar Adua jets himself off to Saudi Arabia to receive first class medical treatment whilst millions of Nigerians are dying prematurely due to his general incompetence and his presiding over non-functioning health / medical service.

When will these people leave Nigeria and Nigerians alone. The best place for Mr. Yar'Adua to recorver is a good, dedicated and up to date hospital environment and not in the Aso Rock. Why was he rushed back by these selfish, self centered and very greedy group? f From all indications the signs are not looking good.

I do not know why, they can not get into their skulls, that Mr. Yar'Adua is permanently incapacitated and can never function as the President again. If as it is being rummured, that Mr. Yar'Adua was brought into the country, in a state of semi unconsiousness, then it is imperative that, the acting President, the Presidency and the national assemblies, should thoroughlly investigate the statements, credited to Mr. Yar'Adua by Mr. Adeniyi, the presidential spokes person. In the absence of Prez Yaradua, the V.P. Goodluck is auguring bad luck for Nigeria. Power has mad him insane as can be seen from his shuffling and dismissing of ministers. He has acted autocratic. It would be in the interest of Nigerians for the Prez to get back the reigns of power health permitting and restore law and order in Nigeria. Failing that, Nigeria is sure to slip into chaos and confusion and bickering among power-sharks.

Maybe the BBC report through who he only talk to 'his subject' could give us the answer to the question.

Welcome to the Land of confusion called Nigeria!!

The turn of events and circumstances have shown that the President is not privy to and not aware of all the confusion being created by just a few who are not bothered what happens to the country as long as their selfish motives are met. So the president does not have any question to answer nor apologies to give only that he could have acted much earlier to "tow the line of honour" as someone said recently, when his health still allowed him to communicate. It is just unfortunate that some people are playing politics and thus making mockery of the president's health. But they seem not to remember that "the evil that men do lives with them and after them".

It sadens me when Tunrai (Yaradua`s wife) with the help of some looters and enemies of Nigeria plans to distabilize the country inspite of what is done to keep it together even though we don`t belong together! Why is it so hard for President, and commander in thief, in person of Turai in Yaradua to let go of power even at the point of death; that`s obviously not about having the interest of the state at heart; it`s about satisfying their irrational urge for power and all the stealing and bragging that comes with it! They`re less concerned about what the people feel in as much as their selfish interest is protected; I wonder when the country would be free; can`t we for God sake have some sane people in government!!! What a shame!

I have no idea if he is fit to govern or not but if the numbers of his countrymen wanting my help to move millions of pounds out of Nigeria are anything to go by something needs doing about the government over there.
