Radio 2 Young Folk Award: the search is on for new young talent

BBC Radio 2 has launched the 2009 Young Folk Award and is looking for people aged between 15 and 20, performing folk, roots and acoustic music from any culture, to join in the annual UK-wide competition.

Prizes include gigs at top UK festivals, a Radio 2 session and a year's free membership of the Musicians' Union.

Entries will be judged this September and up to 12 acts will then be invited to the semi-final audition weekend in Stratford-on-Avon from 10 to 12 October.

At the semi-final, Tom McConville, Damien Barber and other music industry professionals will work with the entrants, leading workshops in stagecraft, technical support and the music business, and advise on their performances for the semi-final concert.

Up to six acts then go to the Queen Elizabeth Hall, in London's Southbank Centre, for the final on Friday 5 December.

Highlights of this show will be broadcast on Radio 2's Mike Harding show.

To enter, each group, duo or soloist should send a recording of their music along with a completed entry form to: BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award, Mrs Casey Music, PO Box 296, Matlock, Derbyshire, DE4 3XU.

To request an entry form please email info@mrscasey.co.uk or call 01629 827012.

Alternatively download an entry form at bbc.co.uk/folk.

Entrants must live in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland.

For information and full entry guidelines visit bbc.co.uk/folk, email info@mrscasey.co.uk, or call 01629 827012.

Entry forms and recordings must arrive by Monday 1 September 2008.

Previous winners have been Tim van Eyken, Uiscedwr, Bodega, Last Orders and last year's winners, Jeana Leslie and Siobhan Miller, who have a busy folk festival itinerary for 2008.

The competition is open to soloists, duos and groups and always attracts a large and diverse entry.
