 Hit
drama series Spooks is recommissioned for BBC ONE
Spooks, the hit BBC ONE drama series about secret agents and
MI5, has been re-commissioned from Kudos Productions for a second
series, it was announced by Jane Tranter, BBC Controller of Drama
Commissioning.
Spooks stars Matthew MacFadyen, Keeley Hawes, Jenny Agutter, Peter
Firth and David Oyelowo and the original writing team of David Wolstencroft,
Howard Brenton and Simon Mirren will be joined by new writers on
the second series.
The series producer is Jane Featherstone and Simon Crawford-Collins
is producer.
"Spooks has performed outstandingly well on Monday nights, proving
an instant hit with audiences, achieving a debut audience in excess
of 9 million and a 41.2% share, and an average audience of 8.3million,"
says Tranter.
"The recommission for Spooks follows in the wake of recommissions
for Cutting It and Born And Bred."
Executive Producer Gareth Neame, the BBC's Head of Independent Drama
Commissioning, says: "Audiences will be delighted to know that all
the principal characters will return and there will be some new
faces in the next series which will be shown on BBC ONE next year.
"The fast pace and contemporary style of the show will continue
and we’ll explore some of the major security stories of the day."
Executive Producer Stephen Garrett, Kudos’ Chief Executive, says:
"As an independent producer, to have a hit show on BBC ONE is exciting
enough - but to have a hit show that challenged convention is thrilling
beyond measure.
"That Spooks achieved the twin Holy Grails of ratings success
and critical acclaim is a tribute both to the strength and depth
of the team behind the first series, as well as to the extraordinary
support Kudos received from all areas of the BBC.
"This collaboration delivered terrific results. Everyone is
champing at the bit to make series two even better."
The second series of Spooks will start filming in and around London
later this year.
