The pier in the popular Norfolk seaside resort celebrated its centenary in 2001. But there have been piers and jetties in Cromer since Richard II decreed that the town was allowed to levy taxes on incoming cargo to pay for one in 1390.

Piers designed to protect boats in the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th centuries have been damaged by the fierce North Sea.

Today, the Edwardian structure is standing firm and is a popular destination with holidaymakers who come to be entertained at the pier's theatre.
