Green, open spaces are in abundance throughout
Norwich. There are more than 25 parks, gardens and recreation grounds
which are also open-air venues for musical events, sports and play-schemes.
Norwich parks have an important role to play in
providing leisure facilities. Many woodlands and marshes close to
the city are now nature reserves and there are riverside walks by
the Wensum and Yare.
Archery was practised on the site of Chapelfield
Gardens in the 16th century. The present gardens were opened to
the public in 1880.
Close to the centre of the city, the park is a
popular meeting-place and boasts a breathtaking display of crocuses
in the spring.
There is a toddlers' play area with games of petanque,
giant chess and draughts played in the summer months when the gardens
are often used for different outdoor events. A disabled toilet is
provided.
